Daily Gain Of Healthy, Ranch-Weaned, Previously Creep Fed Cattle
Researchers at the Iowa State University reported that creep feeding can improve weaning weight by 60-100 lbs. Response to creep feed depends on forage quality, dam’s milking ability, and calf genetics. Feed efficiency of creep fed calves depends on these factors as well and feed intake is ideal near 1.5% of bodyweight.
Weaning Weight Of Calves Receiving Creep Feed Between 2 and 8 Months Of Age
Comparison of the Value of Creep Fed Calves vs. Non-Creep Fed Calves
Non-Creep | Creep Fed | |
---|---|---|
ADG, lb/day | 2.5 | 3.4 |
Weaned Calf Value | $750 | $840 |
Total Feed Cost/Calf | — | $65 |
Added Value/Calf | — | $25 |
(On average, calves on creep will gain an additional 0.5 – 1.0 lb/hd/day compared to calves not on creep feed)
